Alien Registration Card 外国人カード

If you are going to be staying more than 90 days in Japan, it is compulsory to register yourself as a foreigner, or more bluntly, as an alien. After filling in a multitude of paperwork, I waited about two weeks for my card to be ready. Without it, or evidence you have applied for it, you can't open a bank account, buy a mobile phone and do other official things.

Mugshot.

I certainly look like an alien here, so I guess being registered as one is an affirmation of that!
However, in July this year they are replacing alien registration with residents registration, meaning foreign residents will be recorded alongside Japanese citizens in the government registry.
